The European Union and its member states in Bangladesh on Sunday said that they were deeply saddened as they had to see deaths and violence on Dhaka streets.
The EU made the remarks in a post on X, formerly twitter, at around noon.
‘The European Union and its Member States in Dhaka are deeply saddened to see the loss of life and violence on the streets of Dhaka – vital that a peaceful way forward for participatory and peaceful elections is found,’ the social media post read.
The EU statement came a day after violent clashes between the supporters of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party and members of the police and the ruling Awami League at places in Dhaka on Saturday.
The clashes near the venue of the main opposition BNP’s grand rally in the city’s Naya Paltan area left at least two people—a police member and a leader of the BNP’s youth wing, Juba Dal—killed and over 1,000 others injured.
The BNP on Saturday called countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal for today protesting at attacks on their grand rally in Dhaka and the ruling Awami League on the day announced to hold countrywide ‘peace rally’ for today to counter BNP’s hartal programme.
